Ultimak Rail & Bushnell TRS 25 Red Dot Review

For those out there who have trouble using the stock AK sights or want a red dot optic for quicker target acquisition but don't want to pay $600 for an Aimpoint T1 this set up may be what you're looking for.   I've had this set up on several of my AKs and never had an issue at all with it to report.

Pros:
-Cost.  The entire set-up can be had for around $170 shipped if you pay attention to the sales
-The rail is made out of T6 aluminum and the clamps are 4140 steel
-Installation is very simple and with polymer AK handguards no modification is necessary to the lower handguard.  If you're using wood handguards, the lower may need some fitting
-The rail as plenty of room to mount a light should you have the desire to do so
-Maintains zero
-I haven't seen any change in accuracy with the Ultimak as I have while using the Midwest Industries rail system (but, there's pros and cons to both... and I like both)
-The TRS25 has a 3MOA dot which is about all the accuracy most shooters will get out of their AKs anyway
-The light emitter on the TRS allows for a lower 1/3 co-witness so even if your optic batter died an an inopportune time you still have use of the irons
-I have seen no evidence at all of heat damage.  I don't have the happy switch on any of my AKs but I've also never thought to shoot slowly due to heat.

Cons:
-With all forward AK rail mount options, it does cause the rifle to be slightly front heavy
-The tube gets hot and you may need to watch your grip during rapid fire (see the video for clarification on this...)
-If you're comparing it to an Aimpoint, the dot isn't as clear but I don't expect it to be at this price point either

Here's a video review with a demonstration of some shooting from CQB distances, 60m, and a discussion of the pros and cons of the system:

  1. A little off topic, but what is the actual barrel length of that 103K, not including the pinned muzzle brake?

  2. Hello Mrgunsngear I know this is an AK board but after watching you video I decided on the TRS-25 for my SKS. I worked long and hard on the Tapco railed gas tube to make it rock solid and it is. Ultimak does not offer an SKS mount on their site. One of my other concerns was the heat factor on the TRS-25 from a gas tube mount but again after watching your video I hope it will hold up.
Thank you for the very informative review on the TRS-25 and I am glad I took your advice.

  3. Hi there. Being such a big AK fanatic I was hoping you could discuss the issue of the lack of aftermarket double-tang stocks for bulgarian-made Arsenal milled guns such as the SAM7. I love my milled AK, but I would love to find a more modern tactical stock. Apparently stocks are only made for stamped guns. What gives?!?

  4. I wanted to say mission complete . I just received the Bushnell-trs25 .I bought it though B&H photo site. The prices had risen on Amazon after christmas in the course of a week . The cheapest price I had found was 65 with free shipping . I saved the listing in Fav's and returned on payday the following week. Only to find the price had jumped from 65.00 to 95.00 . After a lot of searching I ended up @ B&H photo'site .Where the price was 85.00 Plus you get a free Fenix eo1 flashlight included .It takes 1 tripple a battery and is prefect for the pocket or key chain as I did. Also the high price tag item the more you get I noticed some of the vortex sight's and scopes coming with free 100 & 50 dollar gift cards as well as another gift some were shooting glasses etc I am really happy with this combo. My rifle is now ready for an up coming class.Thank's MR G&G
